UNIFIED PONY MAGIC THEORY
CLAUSE ONE: Every pony, be they earth pony. pegasus, or unicorn, constantly generates magical energy. Side note: The goddesses generate a MUCH LARGER amount then even the most magical normal pony and are therefore excluded from normal interpretations.
CLAUSE TWO: An overload of magical energy is unhealthy and potentially lethal. Therefore, the pony's body is adapted to use the magic energy as soon as possible.
RELATION OF MAGIC TO EARTH PONIES: Earth ponies generally retain the largest amounts of magical energy at a time. As a result, their muscular mass is supercharged and their immune system tends to be very powerful. Excess magic is bled out through the hooves, where it usually enters the soil and is utilized by various organisms such as microbes, earthworms, and fungi, thus improving the soil's growth ability. Ponies that do not garden or farm tend to instead leak magic into their individual crafts (pastries, furniture, etc) to be reabsorbed by whoever uses them, leading to a cultural appreciation for earth pony products due to them being reinvigorating.
RELATION OF MAGIC TO PEGASI: Pegasi magic is primarily utilized for flight by creating a partial mass nullification field around their body similar to the concept of inertial dampeners. This field will extend to things that pegasi are wearing, but never to their wings; the wings remain unaffected to as to provide a relatively powerful amount of thrust. While the wings can provide enough lift to hover, true flight is achieved by subconsciously increasing the field mass nullification power; belief in one's ability to fly is actually an identifiable function of pegasus flight. Cloud walking and cloud manipulation is a subconscious alteration of a pegasus's field to convince it that clouds are solid.
RELATION OF MAGIC TO UNICORNS: At first glance, this seems the simplest relationship: a unicorn's horn is an organ designed to extract and utilize the magic their body naturally collects in conscious spells. However, certain aspects of unicorn magic, such as a young filly's horn activating randomly, suggest that there is a certain subconscious connection. This is perhaps related to the Cutie Mark Phenomena, wherein a pony's personality affects their own ability to a degree.
CUTIE MARK MAGIC: A pony's cutie mark consists of two parts: a subconscious utilization of a pony's magic to an ability that the pony has found to be a core of their personality, and a semisubconscious alteration of skin pigmentation to represent said ability. While the latter is culturally considered to be a thing to celebrate, the former is in fact more important in pony psychology and the cutie mark phenomena. It is in fact possible, though extremely rare, to have an "invisible" cutie mark; that is to say, a pony can have cutie mark magic without an identifying symbol.
POISON JOAK AND CUTIE MARKS: The poison joak plant has naturally evolved to utilize interference spores in order to utilize a victim's own magic against them. When these spores interact with ponies, they naturally attach to the "special ability" and use a pony's own magical field to subvert said ability. Ironically, this means pre-cutie mark foals are immune to the more inconvenient aspects of poison joak; however, the spores still affect them by using their own magic to make them sick in some manner. (Theoretically.)
OUT OF THE ORDINARY MAGIC UTILIZATION: While it is possible for earth ponies and pegasi to cast "spells" using their own magic, their lack of a natural organ with which to do so makes it incredibly difficult. A non-unicorn requires either incredible focus or a unique mindset to utilize magic in any manner other then passively. The Sonic Rainboom is one such example of a pegasus spell requiring intense focus; the reason why Rainbow Dash had "lost" her ability to do rainbooms since her foalhood was her adult anxiety crowding out her love of speed that she utilized as a conduit for her focused mindset. Pinkie Pie, on the other hoof, has a very unusual mindset, and needs no further explanation.
