Zoru is a trickster fox, and the current head of his family. Nearly a thousand years ago, they were charged with protecting what would become the Everfree Forest by Princess Celestia, and they've done their best to do just that. As time went on, the natural magic of the area turned it into the Everfree Forest, and gave Zoru's family, who were as much a part of the land as the forest itself, increased longevity.
After several encounters both in and outside the forest with the ponies of Ponyville, Zoru has made it clear to all the animals that anypony who ventures into the forest is not to be harmed. Pranks and tricks are fine, and even encouraged, but nothing causing any sort of lasting effect. Any creature in the forest that breaks these rules is punished accordingly, though Zoru is known as a fair and kind Guardian, albeit the biggest prankster of the bunch by far. In fact, it was a suggestion by him when he was young that lead to the first planting of poison joak in the Everfree.
Zoru rarely takes anything seriously, not including his duty as the Guardian of the Forest, of course. He loves to laugh and talk, and has spent many a day just running through the forest, singing merrily the whole way.

Storyline/Background Update 1:
Zoru is still young, so his abilities are weak compared to those of, say, his father, but as the Guardian of the Everfree, he is able to affect things within the forest slightly according to his will. Whether this is to cause a path to loop around to keep trespassers from getting deeper into the forest, or twisting the images of the plants into terrifying mockeries of themselves, it all depends on the situation.
If a trespasser manages to get past all the illusions that Zoru throws at them, Zoru will often take matters into his own paws, despite being a pacifist. The few times he has had to do this, he has fought by outwitting and outmaneuvering his opponent, using illusions to throw them off and tire them out until they are beaten without Zoru having to harm them in any way. After this, they'll often find themselves waking up outside the Everfree, no worse for wear.
Outside of the forest, Zoru has little to no special abilities, outside of the ability to levitate, and a few weak illusions.
Those who know Zoru well know how to spot one of his illusions. Like him, any creature created by his illusions will have emerald green eyes, and within the illusions there will always be a vague scent of lilacs.
