As anypony who has read Lauren Faust's comments regarding the show and its story knows, executive meddling effectively shut down her idea for an over-arching "magical girl-esque" plot, in exchange for a more traditional episodic approach so that most episodes could be watched in any order. While the show itself has turned out wonderful despite this, I personally feel an overhaul for Season 2 returning to the overarching plot concept would be a welcome change, especially if it were to introduce a recurring villain, as the series is really lacking in legitimate "villain" characters right now.
Anypony else feel like sharing their opinions on the original plot concept, or their hopes for Season 2?

I think that it would be awesome if they made an episode for Doctor Whooves and Derpy, as well as an episode featuring Lyra and Bon-Bon. I'd also like to see the return of Steven Magnet, Gilda, and Trixie. Of course, those are very fanboy requests...

I imagine that Derpy is going to have a larger supporting role for season 2, considering what info Lauren has already given the fans regarding her. As for "Doctor Whooves", the Hub can't exactly go making his character the same as the fanbase imagines him to be. Pony or not, they can't really take the BBC's most prized character. In the long run, I suspect many minor characters will be making return appearances, if only for the sake of supplying antagonists for the episodes.

You could kind of say that the Gala was an over-arching plot for season one. It was first mentioned in episode three, was referred to in a few more episodes, and then finally occurred right at the very end. I think the closest we'll get is something like that, where a few episodes are themed around one thing, but most are stand alone.

I'm hoping for the return of Luna. She's got all of three seconds, and yet she's one of the most beloved characters of the show, and I'm really interested in seeing how the creators handle her. Celestia knows there's about a dozen fanons of her, ranging from vengefully plotting to adorable abacusy.

@sugar Song- Unfortunately, I think that just might be the case. Only a couple episodes themed around the same thing, and then possibly used for the season finale. If nothing else, though, I would like a well-developed villain that could be used as the recurring baddie of the show. Sturmpony- I, too, am looking forward to seeing more of Luna. She managed to rack up quite a fanbase despite only being in the pilot, and I'd like to see her further developed. In addition to that, while I suspect the show's executives are simply following the principle of "Everything's Better With Princesses", I'd like to learn what Celesitia and Luna's parents were like, and why the two sisters only have the title of 'princess'.

i think it's pretty awesome as it is now.. I like that Derpy will be a recurring character i wish that A LOT of the background ponies get more background story to contineu with.. as to recurring villians.. it could be nice but MlP:FiM doesn't have to do much with villians and fighting! I like my ponies friendly, funny and crazy ALL THE TIME!

Indeed. You have a point that FiM isn't really about fighting bad guys, but I think a villain who is focused around forces that oppose the show's main morals (Cruelty vs. Kindness, Selfishness vs. Generosity, Treachery vs. Loyalty, Falsehood vs. Honesty, Despair vs. Laughter) would be great. Lots of fans already try to incorporate this with concepts like the "Elements of Discord", and I think showing friends fighting against all odds to keep their friendship alive when outside forces threaten to tear them apart still stays true to the point of the show. I'll still love the show even if it doesn't go in that direction, but it is something I would enjoy. ^_^

thepondfamily - I don't think the Hub and BBC could control the level of awesome a combined MLP: FiM and Doctor Whooves show would have. I'm pretty certain my television would explode. ^_^ @princess Luna - I wouldn't know. I only became a brony very recently, and aside from keeping an eye on Equestria Daily, and seeing a few show-related things Lauren Faust posted on her deviantart, this is the only fan community I belong to. ^^;

I do very much want to see more Luna, but I want to see more a little more Celestia as well. Granted she's in about every episode (if not every episode), but she doesn't really have much of a role in most of them. And except for that one point where she was playing around with the tea, she hasn't shown much of herself. She always just seems to have a little smile or a blank face, and it seems she's there to just receive messages from Twilight most of the time. (This is just kind of what I noticed.)
I'm doubtful this will happen, the show being a show directed towered children and all, but I want a little more drama in the show. I had a longer paragraph trying to explain this that I just couldn't get to make the point that I wanted it to. So I guess part of what I mean by that is I want some conflicts to be a little more serious, maybe? I want to you know, actually have to feel for a character. I don't know if that makes much sense. I can try and elaborate a little more if need be.

iampinkiepie- If the execs aren't pulling our legs, then more Derpy is coming. ^_^ Anonymous- I think I get your point. What you're saying is you want some more mature conflicts, perhaps situations targeted towards the older portion of the fanbase? Nothing excessive or lewd, mind you, but perhaps some drama that an older fan would understand and enjoy more than the standard situation of the week we got with season one?
